Halsey, Betty Eileen
Age 95 of Horton, MI, passed away February 20, 2023. Betty was born in Jackson, MI on March 23, 1927 to the late Herschel and Ethel (maiden -Jones) Hayden. She is survived by two sons David (Natalie) Halsey, MD and Brian (Bonnie) Halsey, and daughter-in-law Gale Halsey; grandchildren Sarah Halsey, Amanda (Kit) Kirkland, Jessica (Dan) Brown, Erica (Greg Swets) Halsey, and BJ (Dana) Halsey; great-grandchildren Theodore and Leo Brown, Oscar Swets, Katherine Kirkland, Zachary and Jace Halsey and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years Richard Halsey in 2005 and son Thomas Halsey in 2019.
Betty graduated from Jackson High School and was vice-president of the class of 1944. In years past she was a secretary at Frost and Parkside Schools and retired from the Michigan State Employment Security Commission after a career as an office worker. She was a lover of music; she played the trumpet and organ and was a longtime member singing in the Sweet Adelines Women’s Quartet as well as her church choir. During World War II Betty traveled playing piano to entertain the troops with the USO. She loved travel and was always open to new experiences; Betty and her husband Dick traveled the globe including trips to Egypt, the Amazon, Europe, and all over the United States. She was also a devoted sports fan, especially University of Michigan football. Betty was a self-proclaimed people person and made you feel valued and understood. She loved getting to know everyone she came across, including fellow YMCA members, the health care workers that helped care for her and her wonderful neighbors. She touched so many people and will be remembered as a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church (278 W Michigan Ave, Jackson, MI) where she was a long time member on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 2pm with Reverend Tonya Arnesen officiating. She will be interred next to her beloved husband Richard at private graveside services Monday at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and the church from 1 pm until service time. Contributions in her memory and directed to the Jackson Interfaith Shelter, Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice or the First United Methodist Church.
