John George Velner's Obituary
Age 90, lifelong resident of Michigan Center, passed away Friday, January 4, 2019 at Country Meadows Care Home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce A. Velner in October 2018; parents, Al and LaVaughn Velner; step-daughter, Colleen "Candy" Rice; siblings, Loys Tucker and Carl Velner. John is survived by his son, John R. (Pam) Velner of Adrian; step-children, Kathleen Potter-Maddin and Andrew (Patty) Clemons both of Grass Lake; brother, Paul Velner of Jackson; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces. John was a 1947 graduate of Michigan Center High School and served the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Anderson. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, driving many years and retiring from USF Holland Motor Freight. He loved sports, especially the Detroit Tigers; enjoyed cars, both old and new and adored his pets. He was a long time member of the Michigan Center Lions Club. Cremation has taken place and a memorial to celebrate John's life will be held at the funeral home on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 11:00 am with SouthernCare Hospice Chaplain David Goldsmith officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am. Military honors will be provided by the Jackson County American Legion Ritual Team. John's family would like to give thanks to the staff of both Country Meadows and SouthernCare Hospice for the wonderful care that was given to him.
