Martin Sayre Smith's Obituary
Age 93, of Leoni Township, passed away at his home Saturday, August 17, 2019. He is survived by his wife of 71 years; Betty Smith, seven children: Trudy Lynn (Earl) Gordon, Joanne Marie (Jerry) Jeziorski, Patricia Ann Smith, Byron Alan Smith, Carol Noreen (Tom) Haney, Lorena Mae (Michael) Ostrom and Martin Vaughn (Shelly) Smith, sixteen grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren), brother; Allen (Barb) Smith, sisters; Nedra Coito and Cleone Miller, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson; Mark Smith, sister Joyce Haigh and his parents; Joseph A. and Nellie E. (Martin) Smith. He served the nation in the US Army in the Pacific Theater in World War II, had worked as a truck and fork lift driver at ITT Hancock, owned and operated Smith's Poultry Farm for many years, enjoyed hunting and fishing, was a member of the American Legion Post #526 in Munith, the Jackson Chapter of the Steelheaders (Michigan Salmon and Steelheaders Fishing Assoc.) the Grass Lake Sportsman Club and the National Wild Turkey Federation. Services will be held at the funeral home Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 11 am with Rev. Larry Rubing officiating and Kaitlin Smith delivering the eulogy. officiating. Interment Leoni Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday evening 5-8 pm. Contributions in his memory are directed to the Grass Lake Sportsman Club Take a Kid Fishing Project. Graveside military honors will be offered by the Jackson County American Legion Ritual Team.
