Michael "Mike" Harold Thompson's Obituary
Michael Harold Thompson, age 76, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, July 20, 2023. Friends and family of Mike will gather Friday, July 28, 2023, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Eineder Funeral Home - Michigan Center Chapel (formerly Arthur-Day Funeral Home), at 820 Fifth Street, Michigan Center, MI 49256. Linda Carmony will officiate the service beginning at 2:00 PM.
Mike was born on November 4, 1946, in Jackson, Michigan to Harold and Ruth (Rowley) Thompson. Michael married the love of his life, Sharon (Hull), on July 26, 1971, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and together they spent nearly 53 years happily married. Mike loved talking to people and styling hair so much that he was still actively cutting hair. He was not only an excellent barber, having many prominent clients within the community, he was also a wonderful listener. Michael was a huge family man who cared deeply about the success of his children. When his children were young, Mike would make them practice their multiplication tables after school so they were always prepared and good in math - and they were. When his son was young, and became involved in Scouting, Mike became equally involved. Mike never settled to be just a Scout Leader; he went on to become District Chairman and Assistant Council Commissioner. Michael hosted a district-wide weekend long camporee with events and activities for several Scout Troops on his parent's 250 acre farm. Every Father's Day for the family would be spent at Cedar Point where Mike made sure everyone knew they absolutely had to ride all the rides. In addition to the annual trip to Cedar Point, Mike took his family to St. Ignace every summer for the family vacation. After Sharon retired from Meijer, Michael and Sharon traveled the state and the country. Mike served in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment of Vietnam and Cambodia during his time of service in the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. The 11th Cav holds annual conventions which Mike and Sharon looked forward to attending so Mike could reconnect with his Army buddies. Mike and Sharon also enjoyed weekly trips to the casino; where either would occasionally come home a winner. Most of all, Michael was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend that was always there for everyone he loved and cared about.
Michael will be missed by his loving wife, Sharon; his children, Kim (Mark) Kanik, Sherri (Alan) Wiel and Jeff (Nikhil Enugula) Thompson; grandchildren Garrett, Aaron, Mitchell and Scott Kanik, Jacob and Amanda Wiel, and Ayzule Thompson-Enugula. Mike is survived by an older brother, Ron (Sue) Thompson, a nephew, Tom Geistel, several cousins and longtime friends; he is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sharon (Ray) Kennedy .
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment of Vietnam and Cambodia to help maintain funds for their scholarship programs for Vietnam veterans' children and grandchildren (https://www.blackhorse.org/scholarships/).
