My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dick. When I received the news this morning, my heart sank. I was Dick’s science product manager for Merrill Publishing from 1985-1988. At the time, we had a very successful K-5 science program called Accent on Science. Whenever Dick would come to Columbus for an author meeting, I was the guy that picked him up at the airport if I was in town. A short trip but filled with good conversation. Seems like yesterday.
I echo what many have already said here about Dick. Of course he was a knowledgeable science author but (for me) just a genuine and good person who cared. He had a great personality and was always upbeat and positive. I enjoyed being in his company and it was an honor, privilege and a joy for me to get to work with him. He was an author but a personal friend as well. He loved science education and he made a difference in the lives of so many students through his teaching and his publications. His legacy and memory endures.
