Russell Leon Backus' Obituary
Age 80, of Mattawan, formerly of Jackson, Wayland, Climax and Grand Rapids, passed away at the Bronson Methodist Hospital December 11, 2019. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine F. (maiden-Klimach) Backus, three children; Julie Bridgewater, Janice (Eric) Winton and Dan (Connie) Backus, four step children; Lesa Mansfield, Jerry Woodall, Ron (Vicki) Saye and Barb (Jack) Swart, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anita, two sons; Todd and David, sister; Edna Thompson, son in law; Roger Bridgewater and his parents; Emil and Elsie (maiden-Houck) Backus. He had a long and rewarding career in the engineering field at the Michigan State Department of Transportation working as a construction technician. After retiring he worked for the City of Jackson Street Department overseeing road and bridge construction and performing inspections. He enjoyed traveling and being with his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather and in-law. He enjoyed the outdoors and watching Baseball, Football and NASCAR races on television and formerly was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3634 in Michigan Center. He will be sadly missed. His family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, December 16, 2019 from 11 am until one pm for a Celebration of Life Gathering. Cremation to follow. After the service the family will host a luncheon at the Michigan Center Eagles.
