Sally Louise McCarthy's Obituary
Sally Louise Patterson McCarthy left her forever home of Clark Lake on Sunday, November 27, 2022, just days away from what would have been her 77th birthday on December 7th. She was the daughter of Vondell (Pat) and June Patterson. With her three sisters, Sue Cavalear, Judy Smith, and Peggy Patterson, she grew up in Toledo and graduated from DeVilbiss High School, Class of 1963. She went on to complete her education at University of Toledo, Mercy School of Nursing, and University of Detroit Mercy School of Nursing.
Sally P. McCarthy was a long-time resident of Toledo, Ohio. During the 70’s and 80’s she was active in the Junior League. Sally McCarthy enjoyed a successful career in Hospitality Sales and Marketing for The Sheraton on Secor Road, The Holiday Inn Riverside and The Radisson Downtown. In the mid 1990’s Sally earned her BSN nursing license. The next step in her career was something she truly loved for the challenges that it presented, caring for others as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. That continued until she retired in 2015.
Sally McCarthy spent every summer at her family’s cottage at Clark Lake, Michigan. The Patterson sisters were very active in much of the Clark Lake community history. Whether she was decorating a raft for the annual Raft-O-Rama parade, competing as a slalom skier with the Pine Riders or simply entertaining friends and family. Sally always brought life to the party and never backed away from a good time.
Sally married and raised a family with Daniel J. McCarthy. Together they had two sons, Michael and Matthew. As I write this, I find it difficult to find the right words to convey how important our mother was to each of us. She was our champion, and she was our friend. We will miss her always.
In 2000 Sally built a home on the Patterson cottage site and moved to Clark Lake full time. Sally lived there with her partner Phil Shindler until her passing.
Sally is survived by her sisters; Judy Smith, Susan Cavalear and Peggy Patterson; sons Michael (Kristin) McCarthy, Matthew McCarthy and his partner Lulu Stewart; grandchildren Kyle McCarthy and Riley McCarthy; nieces and nephews Jim Devilbiss, Shannon and Dr. Bill Gallup, Linda and Alan Rava, Rob and Kathy Cavalear, Marc and Trudy Smith, Dr. Scott and Shelly Smith, Kacey and Preston Gardner, William and Taylor Gallup.
There will be a celebration of Sally’s life at Eagle’s Nest at Clark Lake on Sunday, December 11, 2022, from 2 – 5 PM.
