Walter J Kochanski's Obituary
Walter J. Kochanski, 98, of Somerset, Michigan, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025 at Victorian Villa, Jackson. Walter’s family and friends will gather from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Clarklake, Michigan. His funeral mass will directly follow at 12:00 p.m. Father Tom Helfrich, OSFS will serve as celebrant. Internment will take place at 2:00 pm Friday, August 29, 2025 at Michigan Memorial Park in Flat Rock, Michigan. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
He was born on December 2, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan to Joseph and Anna (Brozowski) Kochanski. Walter proudly served in the United States Army during World War II stationed in Korea and Japan. He was honored with the Asiatic-Pacific Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Theater Ribbon. Walter married the love of his life and next-door neighbor, Lillian Rose Smarch, on September 3, 1949, in Delray, Michigan. He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry, building beautiful furniture and his own home. Walter will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Walter will be missed by his spouse Lillian Kochanski; his children, Linda Cullen, Daniel “Butch” Kochanski, and Randall (Elisha) Kochanski; grandchildren, Kathleen (Nate) Jakinovich and Joseph McCarthy; great grandchildren, Aden, Elijah, Clara, and Walter. He is preceded in death by his parents; multiple siblings, and a son-in-law, Walter Cullen.
