Keith Ludwig
Chuck and I were good buddies in high school. I remember when he first arrived at Onsted Schools from the country school. He and Calvin Durkee came to our class at the same time and graduated together. We played football together for all four years. On varsity I was a center and Chuck was guard lining up next to me. He was a good player. An outstanding defensive guard, particularly when he got a little mad. He was such an easy going guy which meant that coach had to make an effort at getting him mad. One game coach said something that really worked and through the line he went and sacked the quarterback real good. Can't remember what he said about it. Probably something like that ought to make the coach happy. Before 1st hour bell Chuck would be back at the library reading the Detroit paper sports section. Anything you wanted to know about the Tigers Lions Mich Mich st Adrian college--he knew. He had an outstanding memory for these things. Of course since those early days, whenever we talked I would get updates on the sports world. Probably 20 or 30 years ago I was setting next to Chuck at an Onsted High School game and he said, you know Keith I think I could still play this game, only they would have to move the yard markers a lot closer together. He could always make people laugh. Several times we went together to Briggs Stadium--Tigers and Lions. Often to Adrian College-football and basketball games. After the games, cheeseburger shake and fries. Chuck's mom and dad were so nice to me and gentle people. Onsted was still in the manual telephone mode when we were in high school. Mrs. Fish was one of the operators. I would dial the operator and she would say hi Keith, looking for Chuck, I'll find him for you. Soon I was hooked up with Chuck. Chuck and Connie stood up for Roberta and myself at our wedding in 1959. About 2 years ago we stopped by Chuck's place at the lake. Roberta was too sick with Alzheimers to get out of the car. He came out to the car to talk with Roberta, while I don't remember the words I remember how gentle and comforting he was for Roberta and her smiles. Proud to have had him for a friend. He loved his family and friends. A gentle, humble, caring, well mannered and hard working man. And strong, those milk cans were not light.I am so sad that he has passed from this world and offer my condolences to the family. God Bless you. When we get together in Heaven I expect we will all get a full update on the Tigers and Lions.
