Dear Mafy and family,
I'm so sorry for your loss. Willard was one of the very first neighbors I met when I moved up the street on Case Rd.16 years ago. While on a morning walk and passing Willard, he greeted me with, "Do you want any walnuts? I'm trying to clean them up off the lawn. They're such a mess." When we introduced ourselves, it was, "I'm Willard. Like the rat." Puzzled, I asked what he meant by that. Then he reminded me of the 1970s movie 'Willard,' whose title character was a man named Willard whose friends were rats. Now I really wasn't sure what to make of that. But since then I've learned, over the years, that Willard has a long and active history in our community and neighborhood, and a good one at that. His wry sense of humor, his kindness as a neighbor and his civic contributions to our village and nation (in service) will be sorely missed in our community. RIP Willard.
