Hugh was born on May 31, 1929, at home in Hudson, Michigan to Hugh and Alice (Ambler) Howland Sr. Hugh graduated in 1947 from Brooklyn High School. He then married the love of his life, Donna, and spent 74 years happily married. He will be remembered as being very devoted to his faith and involved with the original First Baptist Church in Brooklyn. He taught Sunday School for many years. Hugh was also a successful dairy farmer. Hugh was a member of the Holstein - Friesian Association and was awarded many blue ribbons for his prize-winning Holstein Cows. Hugh’s cows were known to have the most butter fat content in their milk. Along with farming, Hugh wanted to learn to fly. Instead of just taking flying lessons and then purchasing a plane, Hugh purchased a Maule airplane made in Napoleon, Michigan prior to even taking one lesson. He bought this type of airplane because it was known for short take offs, so he was able to build a runway for himself on his farm. Once Hugh did get his pilot’s license, he would fly his family to Florida for vacations. Hugh and Donna flew to the Bahama’s one year for a mission conference. Hugh eventually purchased a Beach Craft Bonanza. Not only would Hugh fly for pleasure, but he also would help any way he could with his plane. He helped a local farmer track down a missing heifer one time. He also flew to Illinois to pick up school supplies for the opening of Jackson Baptist Schools. Later in life, Hugh opened a trucking business, to transport grain. He became so well known that he had to purchase a total of 7 trucks and hired 6 drivers, named Trinity Lines, to keep up with the demand of the local farmers. Finally, later in life, Hugh fell in love with the game of golf. He referred to the game as Cow Pasture Pool!
Hugh will be missed by his beloved wife, Donna; his children, Kristine (Jim) Hittler and Brian Howland, grandchildren, Joshua (Emily) Hittler and Zechariah (Lindsay) Hittler, great grandchildren, Eva Rose Hittler, Joel Daniel Hittler, Lydia Grace Hittler, Elliott James Hittler, Austin Drew Hittler, Addison Joy Hittler. He is preceded in death by His parents, Hugh and Alice Howland Sr., siblings, Betty Jean Ehnis, Fredrick Howland, Charles Howland and Delbert Howland and his daughter, Terri L Howland.
